Viral grocery receipt shows just how much prices have increased in the last 20 years

A grocery receipt from 2006 is making the rounds on X and sparking widespread discussion online about the sharp rise in food prices over the last two decades.

The receipt, found by a woman sorting through her mother’s old belongings, shows a total bill of $161.87 for 79 items. The post has accumulated more than 12 million views, along with thousands of reposts and comments from consumers comparing past prices to current grocery bills.

Estimates suggest that replicating the exact same shopping list today would likely cost well over $400, depending on brand choices and store promotions.

The receipt surfaces at a time when the cost of groceries remains a central talking point in American politics. Household budgets took a severe hit during the Biden administration due to post-pandemic supply disruptions and global inflation, a trend that has persisted into the Trump administration as military conflict in Iran drives up commodity prices.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly downplayed the ongoing price hikes, but higher costs at the grocery store continue to frustrate voters nationwide.

Grocery prices naturally vary by region, store location and package size, but a comparison of the 2006 receipt to 2026 Walmart prices — compiled in a report by NBC affiliate KTAL — shows exactly how much everyday items have gone up.
