A VIDEO showing an abandoned site claimed to be the former Sandakan Civil Hospital has gone viral on TikTok, drawing attention to the long-forgotten structure now largely reclaimed by surrounding jungle.

The clip shows deteriorating buildings, broken corridors and archways covered by thick vegetation, with large trees and roots growing through parts of the structure.

Online users claimed the site was once known as the Sandakan Civil Hospital during the British North Borneo era, serving residents of the town when Sandakan was an important administrative centre.

Archival material from the Basel Mission (BM) Archives describes a Sandakan Civil Hospital complex as consisting of colonial-style buildings with distinctive roofs and verandas set amid forested surroundings in the area.

The video has sparked curiosity among social media users, with many commenting on the historical significance of the site and calling for greater awareness and preservation of Sabah’s heritage structures.
