Visayas grid on red, yellow alerts

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines placed the Visayas grid under red and yellow alert on Thursday, July 9, as several power plants remained unavailable amid high electricity demand.

The NGCP said the Visayas grid will be under red alert from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., while yellow alert status would be raised from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and again from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Available capacity was placed at 2,561 megawatts (MW), lower than the projected peak demand of 2,568 MW.

The NGCP said that 31 plants are on forced outage, while 14 others are running on derated capacities, for a total of 959.3MW unavailable to the grid.

A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand, while a yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
