Visayas grid placed under yellow alert

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Monday placed the Visayas grid on yellow alert as major power plants remain unavailable.

NGCP said that the yellow alert will be between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. as peak demand is expected to reach 2,327 megawatts (MW), while available supply is only at 2,478 MW.

The transmission firm said that 26 plants are on forced outage while 16 others are running on derated capacities for a total of 1,055.8 MW unavailable to the grid.

NGCP said major coal plants such as Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1, Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2,  Kepco SPC Power Corporation Unit 1, and Cebu Energy Development Corp. Unit 1 are unavailable while TPC Coal has been on emergency shutdown since August 2.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
