Visayas grid under red alert amid plant outages, high demand

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Visayas grid under red and yellow alert statuses on Friday, as several power plants remained unavailable amid high electricity demand.

In an advisory, the NGCP said the Visayas grid would be under red alert from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., while yellow alert status would be raised from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and again from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Available capacity was placed at 2,562 megawatts (MW), slightly above the projected peak demand of 2,542 MW.

A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid's regulating requirement, while a yellow alert is declared when operating margins are inadequate to meet contingency requirements.

The NGCP said 11 power plants have been on forced outage since May, while one plant has been offline since March.

Three other plants have been unavailable since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.

In addition, 15 power plants were operating on derated capacities, resulting in a total of 952.4 MW unavailable to the grid.

The grid operator cited the unavailability of large coal-fired power plants, TVI 1, TVI 2, PEDC 3 and KSPC 2, along with high system demand forecast as factors behind the red alert declaration.

The Luzon and Mindanao grids, meanwhile, were expected to operate under normal conditions.
