Volkswagen ID. Tiguan has been confirmed as the next mainstream electric SUV from Germany.
Volkswagen has decided to continue on with their ID branding for electric vehicles, and not only that, they’ve also decided that the next entry to their electric vehicle portfolio will be the ID. Tiguan. In a press release, the Volkswagen Group confirmed that the ID. Tiguan would go into production soon and arrive in select markets starting in 2027. Moving away from their numeric naming scheme and back to recognizable names like ‘ID. Tiguan’ and ‘ID. Polo‘ is part of their revised product strategy.

The ID. Tiguan replaces the ID.4 and ID.5 crossovers, which weren’t very successful products. It’s also clear that Volkswagen will not be going ‘all-in’ on electric, as the Tiguan will also be available with ICE and hybrid powertrains alongside this BEV. The launch of the ID. Tiguan will be next month with testing still in progress.

Volkswagen itself has been pretty tight lipped with details around this new model, but there are plenty of details available online. What’s pretty much confirmed is that the ID. Tiguan will sit on the MEB+ platform and be available with either a 58kWh LFP or 77kWh NMC battery pack, with WLTP ranges of 450km to 600km being reported. Electric motor outputs are expected to be around 190 horsepower for the base model, around 280 horsepower for the mid spec variant and close to 300 horsepower for the all-wheel drive twin motor variant.

As for equipment, you can expect alloy rim options up to 21″ and Dynamic Chassis Control, but more will be shared on launch. Perhaps we’ll also see the return of more physical buttons as Volkswagen have also made this change on other models in their lineup. Can we expect the ID. Tiguan to appear in Malaysia? Well, we have our doubts. During the excise duty and import tax holiday on electric vehicles, no electric Volkswagen models were brought into Malaysia at all. Either the management knew that they’d be ‘unsellable’ even without taxes or the profit margins would be too slim to justify the inventory and training costs associated with new model launches.

Going forward, the market share of electric vehicles only seems to be expanding in Malaysia and the European and Japanese brands are simply not putting up a fight at all. Perhaps an aggressive and earnest Volkswagen ID. Tiguan can change things. In 2027, Volkswagen would need to think about local assembly of the ID. Tiguan for it to have any chance at all of being competitive. Given how big the investment into local assembly would be, we have our doubts Malaysia is high on the priority list for Volkswagen right now as the company is focused on cost-cutting and ‘right-sizing’ the company at the current moment.
