Wales missed out on a second consecutive World Cup in heartbreaking fashion after losing on penalties in their play-off semi-final against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Cardiff.

Dan James scored a second-half screamer to seemingly set Wales on their way, but Bosnia captain Edin Dzeko equalised with four minutes remaining to send the contest to extra time.

Penalties felt inevitable amid a nervy extra half-an-hour and, in the end, it was Brennan Johnson and Neco Williams who missed crucial spot-kicks, as the visitors caused an upset away from home to emerge 4-2 winners in the shoot-out.

It means Bosnia will host Italy in the play-off final on Tuesday night. The Republic of Ireland also missed out on a play-off final, via penalties,to the Czech Republic, with Northern Ireland losing to Italy on a disastrous night for the home nations.

Bosnia-Herzegovina captain Edin Dzeko:

05:00 , Kieran Jackson

"We are happy that we could celebrate with our fans.

"They follow us everywhere we go and this is just as much for them as it is us. I think it was just about that one ball that comes and we score from it.

"I think at the beginning we were a bit shy and protecting our goal, even though they only had one chance in the first half. The goal they scored was a bit unlucky for us but I think it gave us a different energy, power and confidence.

"Once we got it to 1-1 I think we deserved it, and I think at the end we had chances to get that second goal. Wales got forward more in the second half but we defended well and won the game on penalties."

Wales boss Craig Bellamy: 'We stopped playing'

00:30 , Kieran Jackson

“I am very proud but definitely disappointed,” he said. “There was a lot of good tonight, but it wasn’t to be.

“I got what I wanted from my team, definitely. But with 20 minutes left we stopped playing and we just can’t do that, even though it was understandable.

“It was a big lesson for us. We needed to see the game out with the ball.

“We regained momentum in extra time. Considering the chances we created and moments we had, maybe we’d have liked to have been out of sight by then.”

“It's either the best way to go through or the worst way to go out in football, we were on the rough end of it today,” Williams tells the BBC.

“It is what it is, we'll all reflect over the game and pick out bits that we could've done better in, but that's all in hindsight.

“What Craig Bellamy's done through this campaign and what he's trying to build here, it looks good and I think everyone's confident for the future. You win together and you lose together.”

"That's something we can look at in the future, but for now it's a lot of disappointment."
