Wales set to lose manager Craig Bellamy to Championship club

  • Craig Bellamy, the current manager of the Welsh national football team, is in advanced discussions to take over as manager of Sky Bet Championship club Burnley.
  • Bellamy, who was appointed Wales manager in July 2024 and is halfway through a four-year contract, had initially committed to the Euro 2028 campaign despite previous speculation linking him to other clubs.
  • His tenure with Wales began impressively with a nine-game unbeaten run and promotion to Nations League A, but the team later failed to qualify for this summer's World Cup after a play-off penalty shootout loss and has not won any of its last four games.
  • Noel Mooney, chief executive of the Football Association of Wales, acknowledged Bellamy's significant contribution to Welsh football while recognising that individuals have different career objectives.
  • Should Bellamy depart, potential candidates to succeed him as Wales manager include Steve Cooper, who recently left Danish club Brondby, and Rob Edwards, who was recently dismissed by Wolves.
