Three inmates in a Hamburg juvenile prison have attacked three prison staff, injuring two of them, judicial authorities in the northern German city said on Sunday.

The attack, which was reportedly not linked to an attempted breakout, took place on Hahnöfersand, an island in the River Elbe to the west of the city.

The prisoners first trapped a warder in a storeroom, injuring him and taking his key, which was then used to gain access to another part of the prison, where other warders eventually foiled the escape.

One warder was seriously injured and taken to hospital. He is expected to be discharged on Sunday.

Police said the incident had been brief and had been dealt with by prison staff before officers arrived at the scene.

The judicial authorities said the case had been handed over to prosecutors. Two of the prisoners involved have been moved, and the third was to be moved on Sunday.

The male prison, which is administered by the city-state of Hamburg, is located in the neighbouring state of Lower Saxony. It has a capacity of 176 prisoners and a further 20 under arrest.
