With only three days before the Municipal Corporation elections in Punjab, the political temperature in Abohar has heated up significantly.
The City-1 Police have registered a case against nine individuals—including the son of Madan Lal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Ward No. 49 (Reserve-SC) —on charges of attempted murder, robbery and disturbing the peace. The police arrested the BJP candidate’s son, Akash and another suspect, Pawan.
Abohar MLA Sandeep Jakhar, accompanied by the affected BJP supporters’ families, went to the City-1 police station. He held discussions with the Station House Officer (SHO) Maninder Singh, spoke to the DIG Ferozepur, SSP Fazilka and later met the Superintendent of Police here demanding a high-level inquiry into the entire incident.
The MLA said that such “high-handedness” and authoritarian behavior would not be tolerated at any cost. He alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), facing imminent defeat, has become completely panicked and is coercively having false cases registered against its political opponents.
Issuing a stern warning, MLA Jakhar asserted that neither the concerned police officials and those who file “false” complaints would be spared when the present government is voted out of power next year.
According to the FIR, Shubham Kumar of Idgah Basti, who sustained severe injuries and was admitted to the Civil Hospital, said in his statement that when he was out for a walk last night at 10.30 PM on the Killianwali Road near his house, nine persons, riding motorcycles, stopped and attacked him using baseballs and sharp weapons. They allegedly robbed him of Rs 3,200 and a silver-metal chain.
When he shouted for help, some people came to his rescue while the assailants fled away. He identified the suspects as Akash, Vijay (son of Madan Lal), Maaku, Pawan, Ankit, Tarun, Ajay, Vijay (Son of Raj Kumar), residents of Sant Nagar and Idgah Basti and Vijay Singh of Malout.
City-1 police said that, based on Shubham’s statement, a case was registered under Sections 109, 115(2), 191(3) and 190 of the BNS and Section 25 of the Arms Act.
