SEGAMAT - The 4.4-magnitude earthquake detected in the waters off Batu Pahat on Tuesday afternoon was also felt by residents in several areas of the district.
Kampung Tengah resident Ahmad Asri Talib, 53, said the tremor at about 4.55pm was among the earthquakes he had felt since the first 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck the district in August last year.
“Suddenly, I felt the ground shake beneath my feet. My son, who was inside the house, was also startled and told me that he could feel the house shaking for about three to four seconds.
“At the time, I had just returned from work and was outside the house.
“Other residents also shared similar experiences in the WhatsApp group after feeling the tremor,” he said when contacted on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, retiree Amran Jaffar, 57, said he felt the tremor while he was at home with his family on Jalan Temenggong, Segamat.
“At the time, I was lying in my room and saw the wardrobe shaking, while my wife told me she could feel the chair trembling.
“The tremor lasted about three to four seconds,” he said.
The incident brought back memories of the 4.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Segamat on Aug 24, 2025, at about 6.13am, with the epicentre detected five kilometres (km) west of Segamat at a depth of 10km.
The tremors were also felt in several areas of Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and southern Pahang, followed by several aftershocks measuring 2.8 magnitude on Aug 24, 3.2 on Aug 27, 2.5 on Aug 28 and 3.4 on Aug 29 last year.
