SANDAKAN (April 20): Parti Warisan (Warisan) president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal visited the site of a fire in Kampung Bahagia here early Monday morning to assess the situation of victims and the extent of damage caused by the incident.

Arriving at about 8.30am, he personally inspected the affected area, which was still shrouded in smoke following the blaze.

Despite the conditions, Mohd Shafie proceeded with the visit as a gesture of concern and solidarity with residents affected by the tragedy, with his presence also offering encouragement to those impacted.

He was accompanied by several Parti Warisan leaders, including Sekong assemblyman Alias Sani, Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong, Karamunting assemblyman Alex Wong, Sungai Sibuga assemblywoman Lisa Alban, as well as a representative of Tanjong Papat assemblyman Alex Thien.

Their presence reflected a strong sense of unity and concern for the fire victims.

During the visit, Mohd Shafie and his delegation surveyed the severely affected areas, observing destroyed homes and surroundings still recovering from the fire.

He also took time to engage with victims, listening to their concerns and gathering information on their immediate needs.

Following the site inspection, Mohd Shafie proceeded to the temporary evacuation centre (PPS), where displaced residents are currently housed.

He expressed sympathy and sadness over the plight of Kampung Bahagia residents, and hoped all victims would be given strength and resilience in facing the ordeal.

Mohd Shafie stressed that disasters of such nature require urgent attention from all parties to ensure assistance is delivered without delay.

Parti Warisan leaders also called on government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), private companies and the public to step assist victims, particularly in providing temporary shelter, food supplies, clothing, basic necessities and financial relief.

He emphasised that the welfare of the people remains a priority, adding that Parti Warisan will continue to monitor the situation closely and coordinate assistance to ensure victims are not left to face hardship alone.
