Warisan to set ‘red line’ on Sabah rights in any future pact: Shafie

SEMPORNA: Parti Warisan (Warisan) will insist on a clear “red line” to safeguard Sabah’s rights and interests in any political cooperation ahead of the next general election, said its president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

Speaking after officiating the Semporna Warisan division’s annual general meeting on Friday, the former Chief Minister said the party remained open to working with other political outfits but would not allow the state’s voice and legitimate entitlements to be compromised by wider coalition interests.

Shafie stated that Warisan’s priority was partnering with Sabah-based parties, pointing to Sarawak as an example where local parties govern without forming a state coalition with national parties, even as cooperation continues at the federal level.

He rejected suggestions that championing state rights reflected excessive state-based sentiment or diminished national loyalty, stressing that national progress is meaningless if the aspirations of grassroots Sabahans are disregarded.

Regarding the number of parliamentary seats Warisan will contest in the upcoming general election, Shafie said the decision ultimately rests with the voters to determine whether the party can deliver on its commitments as a united voice.
