- The Health and Safety Executive has issued a warning against using unregistered tradespeople following a sharp increase in prosecutions for illegal gasfitting.
- Seventeen individuals have been convicted of carrying out illegal gas work since the start of 2025, compared with three in 2022/23 and four in 2023/24.
- Dozens of people have been prosecuted over the past five years for working on gas appliances without Gas Safe Register accreditation.
- Launched at the start of annual Gas Safety Week, the campaign highlights the dangers of improperly installed appliances, including gas leaks, explosions, fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.
- HSE principal inspector Steve Critchlow urged the public to verify that engineers are on the official Gas Safe Register before allowing them to work on heating systems ahead of winter.
