Watch as Donald Trump welcomed Xi Jinping to Washington on Thursday (24 September) for the Chinese president’s first state visit to the US in more than a decade.
The US president greeted Xi during an arrival ceremony at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, on Wednesday. The leaders and their wives shook hands, spoke for a few minutes, and were photographed as a military band played, cannons blasted, and a military jet flew loudly overhead.
Xi’s first state visit to the US since 2015 comes as America and China remain at odds over several trade issues, including AI and semiconductors, and on both topics the US president has been accused by his domestic critics of being too lax with Beijing.
Trump and Xi are expected to address a wide range of issues over trade, technology and Iran during his visit.
In a statement carried by China’s Xinhua state news agency, Xi expressed hopes for a more stable relationship with the US and for Beijing and Washington to be “partners, not rivals.”
