Many people can operate their vehicles and get around easily. But to do that while following traffic rules and practising road safety? That is another question on its own.

Knowing how to read road signs and markings are crucial because sometimes, it could be the difference between life and death.

Yesterday, a motorcyclist in Kuala Krai, Kelantan, suffered a broken leg when his motorcycle crashed into a signboard pole while evading a Proton Saga BLM attempting an illegal U-turn.

In a viral CCTV footage, the motorcyclist can be first seen speeding next to the car. When the car switched directions to make the U-turn, the motorcyclist also had to veer to the side to avoid crashing into the car.

Unfortunately, this caused the motorcycle to crash into a signboard pole, knocking it down and injuring the motorcyclist.

Video footage shows the motorcyclist and his bike flipping over a few times as a cloud of dust rises over the scene.

Netizens share constructive criticism

In the comments, netizens debate over whether the motorcyclist or the driver was in the wrong.

Most claimed that both parties were wrong as the motorcyclist was going very fast and the driver was not following traffic rules.

“It’s obvious that it’s the car’s fault for changing lanes so suddenly. If it really wanted to make a U-turn, it should’ve been in the most right lane, not the middle lane then attempting the U-turn suddenly.”

Additionally, one netizen shared what could be done to avoid accidents like this one.

He urged road users to practise the following basic rules:

  1. Follow the road signs – what can be done and what can’t.
  2. Look in the mirror before cutting or switching lanes.
  3. Signal early before turning.
  4. Follow your vehicle’s lane rules. Those on motorcycles, use the left lane.
  5. Limit your driving speed, especially on roads where there are U-turns, T-junctions and split lanes.
