How to Spot a Job Scam

Job scams can be cleverly disguised, but there are red flags you can look out for to protect yourself. Here’s how you can spot a job scam:

a) Scammer Requests Upfront Payment for the Job Application

If a company asks you to pay a fee to apply for a job, it’s likely a scam. Genuine employers do not require payments from applicants.

Example:

  • Easy Data Entry Job: RM4,000
  • Send your resume to company123@email.com and pay RM100 processing fee.

b) Scammer Promises High Pay for Easy, Simple Tasks

Be cautious of job postings that offer unusually high salaries for simple work, especially if they don’t require experience or an interview.

Example:

  • High-paying WFH job: RM7,000
  • Easy to start, no experience and interview needed.

c) Scammer Requires You to Complete Tasks Under False Claims

Scammers might ask you to perform tasks, like mystery shopping, with promises of high pay. Always verify the legitimacy of such offers.

Example:

  • Mystery Shopper: RM10,000
  • Complete easy tasks on www.sus.com and get highly paid.

When Applying for a Job, Never Do This:

  • Apply Without Prior Research: Always research the company and verify the job listing through official channels before applying.
  • Deposit Money Into Unknown Third-Party Accounts: Legitimate employers will not ask you to transfer money.
  • Share Your Banking and Personal Details: Protect your personal information. Do not share banking or sensitive personal details with potential employers.

Job scams are prevalent, but by staying vigilant and aware of the common tactics used by scammers, you can protect yourself from falling victim. Always be cautious of requests for upfront payments, promises of high pay for simple tasks, and demands for personal information. Conduct thorough research on any company and job offer, and never deposit money into unknown accounts or share sensitive personal details. By following these guidelines, you can ensure a safer job search experience and avoid becoming a target of job scams.
