You may have encountered situations where security guards at certain premises request and attempt to keep our identification cards. Based on a viral video, a man was seen confronting a security guard at a factory in Kulai, Johor, who wanted to keep his identification card and license.
The guard, believed to be a foreigner stationed in a security booth, appeared bewildered when confronted. "You're security, why do you want to keep my IC and license? Malaysian law doesn't allow (you) to keep my IC, you can write down the name," he said.
Meanwhile, according to an explanation on the AskLegal website by Khairul Khalid, security guards have no right to retain visitors' IDs under any circumstances. He states this law is stipulated in the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007). It is an offence punishable under regulation 25, for any person who is not an officer as specified under sub-regulation 7(1) to retain the ID card of another person, unreasonably, other than their own.
Netizens criticized the man for blaming the guard for requesting his IDs initially, while others questioned why he was yelling at them when they were simply following the rules set by their employers.
