Kota Kinabalu: A water purifier agent was RM10,000 poorer or jailed three months for smoking on an AirAsia flight bound for Kota Kinabalu from Kuala Lumpur last week.

Muhammad Afiq Zakwan Zakaria, 33, pleaded guilty before High Court Senior Assistant Registrar Mohammad Azeem Mohd Ridzo, who sat as a magistrate, to committing the offence at 1 am on Nov 6.

From Temerloh, Pahang, Afiq was charged under Regulation 100 (1) of the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016, which provides for a fine of up to RM25,000 or a jail term of up to a year or both on conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor DK Afiqah Alya @ Tinkerbell PG Johari, informed the court that on the said day, senior cabin crew Irnawati Japar was informed by a colleague about cigarette smoke during the flight.

She went in the direction of the smell and when she reached a row of seats, two passengers pointed towards Afiq, who was occupying seat number 26C, smoking a cigarette.
