Kota Kinabalu: Jetama Sdn Bhd is stepping up efforts to improve clean water access in Sabah through a series of strategic projects, including boosting water production in coastal areas and investing in renewable energy initiatives.

Its Chairman Datuk Yussof Abd Manan said the GLC is prioritising water supply development, especially in regions along the west coast where demand continues to rise.

“In addition to our water initiatives, Jetama has also begun venturing into the power sector.

“One solar energy facility is already operational in Labuan and another will soon be developed at Babagon Dam in Penampang as Sabah’s first floating solar project,” he said during their open house event, officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, on Sunday.

Yussof added that Jetama is also introducing seawater desalination technology to support industrial use in Lahad Datu. This allows freshwater from rivers and public utilities to be preserved for domestic use.

“With this approach, seawater is converted into fresh water specifically for industrial purposes, while existing freshwater sources can be reserved for the public,” he explained.

To support rural and off-grid communities, they have begun rolling out a solar-powered pumping system known as the Solar-Powered Modular System (Sopmod). This technology draws groundwater for clean water supply in remote locations without electricity.

Ten locations, including Pulau Banggi, have already been identified for system installation, with implementation currently underway.

“The installation process has started. Due to logistical challenges, particularly involving island areas, progress is slightly slower, but the project is ongoing,” Yussof said.

He expressed hope that these initiatives will act as a catalyst to expand Jetama’s role to improve the wellbeing of the people of Sabah.

In the event at Magellan Sutera Harbour, Jetama also donated RM500,000 to the Sabah Welfare Foundation (YKS) and RM10,000 each to six orphanages.

Also present were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya, Finance Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun, Jetama Deputy Chairman Datuk Juhari Janan and CEO Datuk Ahmad Naim Uddang.

The event also featured performances by acclaimed local artists Misha Omar and Jamal Abdillah, and drew a large crowd of guests.
