The Chinese New Year (CNY) fever is in full swing, and a mosque in Sarawak is taking the celebrations up a notch.
The management of Masjid Al-Qadim in Sibu, Sarawak, has hung red lanterns throughout its compound in conjunction with the upcoming CNY, which falls on Tuesday (17 February). The initiative has not only enlivened the festive atmosphere but also reflects the harmony and spirit of tolerance shared among the various races and religious communities in Sarawak.
The oldest mosque in Sarawak embraces the festive mood
In a Facebook post by Dr Annuar Rapaee, he pointed out that the festive mood of CNY in Sibu is increasingly being felt, inspiring the decision to decorate the compound of Masjid Al-Qadim with red lanterns. Masjid Al-Qadim is notably the oldest mosque in Sarawak.
Dr Annuar, who is also the State Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, was seen personally helping to hang the lanterns at the mosque. He shared:
“Masjid Al-Qadim is also joining in the CNY celebrations this year by putting up lanterns around the mosque. Let’s celebrate CNY together, regardless of race and religion.”
Sarawak: A role model for religious and racial harmony
Additionally, Dr Annuar stated that Sarawak has always been regarded as a role model for strong religious and racial harmony, as reported by The Borneo Post.
“Sarawak is very unique as any festival is celebrated by all, irrespective of religious or racial backgrounds,” he added.
This is not the first time such an interfaith gesture has occurred. In 2015, a unique interfaith gathering was held at the An-Nur Mosque, aimed at promoting and strengthening religious harmony and tolerance within the community.
