We shouldn't fear AI if we keep it 'under control, open and public', expert says

Andrea Renda, Director of Research at the Centre for European Policy Studies, believes the main issue is that “we don't know enough” about what is actually happening inside AI development companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

Renda insists it is “not the first time” humans have built something that could kill us all, after a former Anthropic researcher said there is more than a 10% chance that AI could “kill all humans” within the next decade.

However, Renda points out that there are “many ways we can all be killed by stupid technology” as well.

Renda calls for “opening up and auditing much more” of what is going on inside AI companies, as well as greater investment in public research. He also insists that it is a “very stupid way of programming AI to give it powers we cannot control”.
