Kota Kinabalu: A welder was jailed six days Tuesday for behaving in a threatening manner against his wife, who confronted him over her missing sandals.

Carter Claudius Maurice, in his 40s, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to committing the offence at 6pm on Jan 9, this year in a house at Kg Sugud, Penampang.

The charge under Section 8(1)(e) of the Minor Offences Ordinance provides for RM25 fine or up to seven days’ jail on conviction.

The court was informed by the prosecution that on the said day, Carter went amok and burned the clothes, pillows, mattress and blankets.

The incident occurred after Carter’s wife asked him about the loss of her sandals.

Carter immediately went berserk cursing his wife loudly and threatening to kill her if she did not leave.

When asked by the court why he burned all the things, Carter said it was because the wife kicked them all.

Unrepresented, Carter requested to pay a fine by saying that his welding work, was delayed while he was in police custody.

Carter also apologised to his wife.

Jessica ordered Carter to serve six days behind bars with effect from Tuesday.

In another case, a Filipino labourer was sentenced to 12 months in jail for threatening to kill his relative.

Paperless, Suhud Haris, 43, admitted before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to criminally intimidating one Nazmi Azman at 1pm on Jan 12 this year in a house at Kg Delima, Manggatal.

The offence under Section 506 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine or both on conviction.

The prosecution informed the court that Suhud, who was staying with Nazmi’s family in their house, went berserk and broke the house's sliding windows as he was not satisfied with them for not fulfilling his demand.

Suhud threatened Nazmi that he would kill all the people in the house.

Suhud, who was a drug addict, was arrested by the police following a report lodged by Nazmi as they feared for their safety.

The court ordered Suhud to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest and also to refer him to the Immigration Department thereafter.
