Werder Bremen have signed Switzerland forward Cedric Itten, who arrives on a free transfer from relegated second division club Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Bremen gave no details on the contract which according to news reports is until 2029. His Dusseldorf deal did not cover the third tier.
Itten, 29, scored 16 goals in 32 Dusseldorf matches in the past season. He is currently at the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada as part of the Swiss squad.
He will be reunited with coach Daniel Thioune who was in charge at Dusseldorf until last October and took over in Bremen in March.
“I know Cedric from our time together in Düsseldorf. He is a tall, powerful centre-forward who can hold the ball up and knows where the goal is. His qualities will give us more options in attack,” Thioune said.
Itten said: “Werder are a huge club with a proud history, and my talks with the club went really well. I also had a great conversation with the coach, who I already know from our time together in Düsseldorf.
"It quickly became clear to me that this was a move I wanted to make. I also spoke to some teammates who have played here before. Everything I heard sounded really positive, and I’m delighted to be a Werder Bremen player. I can’t wait to play my first game at the Weserstadion.”
