Wesleyan University dominates regional PRISAA chess meet

The Wesleyan University-Philippines chess team delivered a commanding performance at the 2026 Regional PRISAA Meet, sweeping all three major categories and securing its place in the upcoming national competition.

Held from March 2 to 7 at the library of Columban College Barretto Campus, the regional tournament featured top student athletes from private schools in Region 3.

Demonstrating exceptional strategy and teamwork, the Wesleyan team captured the championships in High School Girls, College Women’s and College Men’s divisions.

The secondary girls team is composed of Woman National Master Millery Gen Subia, Janna Alindogan, Sophia Cyrille Bea and Trisha Nogoy.

In the senior women’s championship squad included Claire San Jose, Lianne Mae Gutierrez, Micah Serrano, Tanya Gambito and Kristine Ador Dionisio.

The men’s team, on the other hand, featured King Arckie Bactol, Frenz Jeremy Ramos, Aldwayne Pineda, Renz Rangcapan and Ivan Justine Pajarillaga.

The tournament was officiated by National Arbiter Rafael Cayanan and FIDE Master-elect Darry Bernardo.

In the team standings, Meycauayan College, Inc. and Guagua National Colleges finished as first and second runners-up, respectively, in the college men’s division.

In the college women’s category, Jesus Is Lord Colleges Foundation, Inc. placed second while Guagua National Colleges took third place honors.

In the high school girls division, Guagua National Colleges secured the runner-up position followed by Columban College.

The Wesleyan team was guided by coaches Prof. Jessica Santos and Dr. Gener Subia, whose leadership and preparation were instrumental in the university’s sweeping success.

On behalf of the team, captains King Arckie Bactol and Micah Serrano expressed gratitude to God for their achievements and extended their appreciation to Dr. Efraim Vidal Jr., director of the university’s sports office, as well as to the Wesleyan University administration and its president, Dr. Irineo Alvaro Jr., and their parents and relatives for their unwavering support.

With the regional titles secured, Wesleyan University-Philippines will now represent Region 3 in the 2026 National PRISAA scheduled from May 8 to 15 in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

The prestigious event will bring together thousands of student-athletes from private schools across the country to compete for national honors.
