It's been a milestone day so far, as Nuno continues his search for a first win in the West Ham hot seat. His side lead at half-time for the first time this season in the Premier League, and have been good value after playing above their 0.27 xG. Newcastle have also outdone their 0.23 xG, yet will be kicking themselves. This is the first time Newcastle have trailed a Premier League game at half-time despite scoring first since March 2024 - which was also against West Ham. They'll be hoping for a similar outcome to that clash where they won 4-3. According to the Opta Supercomputer, West Ham have a 48.7% chance of victory. A draw comes in at 28.5%, while a Newcastle victory has a meagre 22.9% chance of happening.

A seldom-heard cheering floats around the London Stadium as West Ham lead Newcastle 2-1 following a great comeback half. At first, it didn't seem like anything would go West Ham's way, as Bowen smacked the right post in the fourth minute. Just 26 seconds later, Murphy had the ball in the Hammers' net after the visitors countered to blistering effect. In the 11th minute, the looming negativity continued as Bowen was brought down by Thiaw for an initial penalty before the VAR suggested that the defender had got enough of the ball to overturn the decision. Nuno's side really pushed on despite the near-constant setbacks and restored parity in the 35th minute. Paqueta shot from an unassuming position, but managed to drill his effort into the bottom-left corner from range with Pope sent sprawling. After Areola was admittedly the busier of the two stoppers, West Ham turned the game on its head with a bit of luck at long last. Wan-Bissaka surged down the right and crossed, and watched on as a sliding Botman diverted the ball past Pope in stoppage time.

The hosts come forward, and Summerville shapes a shot on Pope's goal. It's a relatively routine stop for the visiting keeper.

Joelinton shoots for the bottom right and Areola takes no chances to palm it behind! The resulting corner is tame and play ultimately restarts with the French goalkeeper.

Murphy sweeps a left-footed shot comfortably over the bar from outside the box. To fit the old cliche, he was very much leaning back there.

14:42
GORDON! Big save from Areola! The Frenchman gets down to the headband-toting winger's snapshot from the edge of the box and offers a strong right hand to tip it round the post!

Here's a great stat from Paqueta's scoring catalogue... Five of the Brazilian's 15 goals for West Ham in the Premier League have been scored outside the penalty area.

14:38
Fernandes picks up the assist for Paqueta's brilliant drilled effort. It's a really simple pass from several feet away. Nothing fancy, but it helps his side get back in this one!

PAQUETA! The Hammers' number 10 slams an effort low for the bottom-right corner, but Pope just gets a finger onto it to tip it off the right post! Corner to come. This is half-cleared, before West Ham win another. Pope is called into action again as Kilman's header has to be tipped over!

Nuno Espirito Santo once again goes in search of his first win at West Ham as his side face Newcastle United at the London Stadium. The capital club risks suffering four successive defeats in the top flight, while the visitors are on the hunt for their fourth straight win across all competitions. In his programme notes, captain Jarrod Bowen claimed that the day's hosts "need to really pull our fingers out now", and that "we’re in trouble now.” He makes a good point. The Hammers are guaranteed to remain in the drop zone no matter what transpires in the final knockings of gameweek 10. However, a win today would put an end to their worst start to a Premier League season after nine matches (four points) since 2006-07. While Newcastle are flying on the continent, their league form has been patchy. Currently in 13th, a win today would see the Magpies put a stop to a drab run on the road. Howe’s team are winless in their last seven Premier League away matches (having drawn four and lost three), and have failed to score in four of those games.

West Ham continue their attractive play, and Pope is fortunate to escape after making a bit of a mess at an attempted clearance.

14:29
Wan-Bissaka flies forward on an overlap on the right before crossing dangerously. It has to be diverted away. Then, in the next phase, some trickery from Paqueta gives Bowen space in the area before he's tackled. West Ham have their first corner, but can't really use it to maximum effect.
West Ham United vs Newcastle United
14:28
Wilson does brilliantly to hold up the ball on the edge of the Newcastle area before sliding in Paqueta on the right. The pass is slightly heavy, but the Brazilian gets there and loops a deflected cross onto the bar! However, the whistle goes for offside.

14:24
Another brief stoppage arrives now as Potts takes down Tonali after a heavy touch in the centre circle. Todibo is then forced to usher the ball behind on the right for Newcastle's second corner of the game.

Burn was down briefly after landing awkwardly when challenging for the ball with Fernandes. After a brief stoppage, the towering defender gets back to his feet. Newcastle continue to loiter with intent until Summerville gets back and clears.

14:21
Murphy! Woltemade moves the ball over to the right of the box as Newcastle look dangerous. Murphy gets a shot off, but Areola parries behind as his side prepare to face their first corner of the day. This delivery is ultimately cleared.

West Ham just can't catch a break today. At least Bowen looks lively...

This is dragging on a bit now. Referee Rob Jones is going to the monitor for an on-field review. It looks like Thiaw did just get his studs to the ball before bringing Bowen down. No penalty!

14:13
PENALTY WEST HAM! After Wan-Bissaka wins the ball off Gordon, the hosts drive forward. It comes inwards from the right, and Thiaw brings down Bowen as the captain skips through the area! The VAR is looking at whether the defender got a nick on the ball...

Since the start of last season, West Ham have conceded the most goals in the opening five minutes of Premier League games of any side (with seven). They try and register a response as Wilson darts down the right of the Magpies' area. He shoots at Pope, but the big keeper isn't going to be beaten from that angle.

There were just 26 seconds between West Ham hitting the post and Newcastle taking a 1-0 lead! Great transitional attack from the visitors, helped in large part by Guimaraes.

14:07
GOAL! NEWCASTLE COUNTER AND MURPHY MAKES IT 1-0! West Ham are bereft as Bowen's earlier smashing of the woodwork is met with a goal at the other end. Devastating. Guimaraes receives the ball on halfway and feeds Murphy up ahead on the right. He gets his head up and drills into the bottom left!
West Ham United vs Newcastle United
14:07
BOWEN OFF THE POST! Summerville and Diouf work brilliantly down the left before Bowen takes up control on the edge of the area. He moves left and shoots across goal. It crashes off the right post!

Today's referee is Robert Jones. He leads the players out to a hopeful, yet tense, London Stadium. A reminder, West Ham are in the grips of their worst all-around start to a season since the 1973-74 season. Will there be a reprieve today against a Newcastle side looking to better their league performances?

Callum Wilson lines up against his former side as struggling West Ham make three changes for Newcastle’s visit. Nuno has recalled Wilson, Mateus Fernandes and Freddie Potts in place of Tomas Soucek, Andy Irving and the injured Ollie Scarles. Potts is making his first Premier League start for West Ham today, 24 years and 240 days since his Dad Steve made his final league PL start for the Hammers in March 2001. His appearance also comes just under 13 years since his brother Dan made his sole top-flight start for the club in January 2013 vs Sunderland.
