KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for several states, with heavy rain, lightning and strong winds expected until 7pm today.

In a post on Facebook, MetMalaysia said affected areas include Perlis; Kedah (Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Padang Terap, Yan, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu); Penang (South Seberang Perai); Perak (Kerian); Pahang (Raub, Bentong, Bera and Rompin); Selangor (Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat and Sepang); the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya; Negeri Sembilan; Melaka; and Johor (Tangkak, Segamat, Muar and Mersing).

In East Malaysia, the warning covers Sarawak’s Samarahan, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit (Song), Bintulu (Tatau), Miri (Subis) and Limbang, as well as Sabah’s Interior (Sipitang, Tenom and Nabawan), West Coast (Ranau), Tawau (Tawau and Lahad Datu) and Sandakan (Telupid, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Sandakan).

MetMalaysia said the warning was issued when thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour are detected or expected to last for more than an hour.

Such alerts are short-term warnings, valid for no more than six hours per issuance.

The advisory was issued at 3.45pm today.
