Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil

KUALA LUMPUR - Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil will raise the possibility of implementing work-from-home (WFH) arrangements for private sector employees at next week’s Cabinet meeting amid worsening haze conditions and concerns over the unusual weather phenomenon.

He said the WFH policy was already in effect for civil servants, while private companies had previously been encouraged to adopt similar arrangements when the war in West Asia first broke out.

“The WFH policy is currently in effect for civil servants. When the war in West Asia first broke out, we also encouraged private companies to adopt similar arrangements.

“InsyaAllah, I will raise this matter at next week’s Cabinet meeting to discuss whether private companies can implement WFH policies and whether they face any constraints,” he told reporters at the Parliament.

He added that the government would also seek feedback from the private sector through the Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Ministry (Kuskop) and the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti), particularly on the feasibility of implementing WFH arrangements.

“We will also ask Kuskop and Miti to engage with private companies and gather their feedback, particularly on the implementation of work-from-home policies,” he said.

The engagement is intended to help the government understand the challenges businesses may encounter in adopting such arrangements.

Fahmi also said the current haze situation was unusual, particularly amid a Super El Niño, requiring authorities to closely monitor changing environmental and weather conditions.

He said the Education Ministry needed to base its decisions on the latest information provided by the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry and the Malaysian Meteorological Department, as conditions could change considerably from one day to the next.

“This is why the Education Ministry has taken certain measures in response to the current situation,” he said.
