- The UK is set to witness its most complete solar eclipse in 27 years later today.
- Ahead of the celestial event, health experts have issued guidance on how to watch the eclipse safely, as permanent damage may be done should precautions not be taken.
- Viewers have been advised to purchase or borrow a pair of special solar eclipse glasses, which are able to block out the sun’s harmful rays, and should bear the following safety certifications: ‘ISO 12312-2' or ‘ISO 12312-2:2015’.
- Royal Museums Greenwich said: “Be careful if you’re planning on reusing an old pair of eclipse glasses: these may not be safe, especially if the lenses are creased or scratched, as their filtering properties may have been compromised.”
- Meanwhile, spectators have been warned against wearing normal sunglasses, no matter how dark they may be, as they do not provide adequate protection, according to the UKHSA.
