A plate of nasi goreng priced at RM50 at the recent F1 event in Sepang has sparked a debate online, with Malaysians divided over whether the price was unreasonable or simply part of attending a major international sporting event.
The discussion started after an attendee shared photos of a food menu at the venue, where nasi goreng cina was listed at RM50.

The attendee joked that they had bought the same dish for around RM7 at a mamak just a day earlier.
Another attendee also questioned the steep food prices, pointing out that nasi goreng ayam was being sold for RM50, while a drink cost RM25 and a tuna sandwich was priced at RM30.
One commenter wrote that F1 was a “sport for rich people”, adding that its target audience included international and higher-spending visitors.

Some said RM50 was too much
Several commenters agreed that RM50 for a simple rice dish was difficult to justify, regardless of the event.
One commenter argued that being able to afford an F1 ticket did not necessarily mean visitors should be expected to accept expensive food.

Another joked that the prices looked as though they had been converted from Bahraini dinar, while others compared the portion to what they could get for much less outside the venue.

Others said it was to be expected at F1
However, not everyone agreed.
Some pointed out that F1 is an international motorsport event and said higher food prices should not come as a surprise.
Some also noted that spectators were already paying thousands of ringgit for certain grandstand tickets, arguing that food prices inside the venue were unlikely to be similar to those at regular eateries.
Still, for many Malaysians, seeing nasi goreng priced at RM50 was enough to get the debate going.
