What Harry Kane said after England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina

  • Harry Kane has said he is “gutted” after England’s defeat to Argentina in the World Cup 2026 semi-final.
  • England lost 2-1 to the South American side after late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez overturned Anthony Gordon’s opener.
  • Kane said: “Gutted for the boys, gutted for the team, the staff, the fans. We played a good game for the large majority of it, once we went one nil up we just we seemed to just try and hold on which at this level is not enough. We have worked so hard to be here, the lads have given every last bit of running sweat blood and tears, so to fall short is just gutting.”
  • He added: “We had a lot of good moments in this tournament, a lot of good games, another semi-final. We talk about knocking on the door, we are close, we just need to find that missing piece in the final stage.”
  • England will now face France in the third-place play-off on Sunday, while Argentina will play Spain in the final on Sunday.
