KIRBY is a video game character and long-running franchise created by Nintendo.
The character first appeared in 1992 in Kirby's Dream Land for the Game Boy and has since become one of Nintendo's most recognisable mascots alongside Mario and Link.
Kirby was designed by Masahiro Sakurai, who was in his early twenties at the time and later went on to create the Super Smash Bros. series.
The character was originally intended as a placeholder design before development began on a more detailed protagonist, but Nintendo ultimately kept the simple pink design for the final game.
Who is Kirby?
Kirby is a small, round, pink creature from a fictional planet called Popstar, within a peaceful region known as Dream Land. He has no visible arms or legs in most artwork, though he is capable of walking, floating and fighting.
His defining trait is the Copy Ability: Kirby can inhale enemies and absorb their powers, temporarily transforming to wield abilities such as swords, fire, ice or hammers. This mechanic has remained central to the series across more than thirty games.
The wider franchise
Since 1992, Kirby has expanded well beyond video games into:
- An animated television series, Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, which aired in the early 2000s
- Manga and comic adaptations
- A large range of merchandise, from plush toys to collectables
- Appearances in Super Smash Bros. as a playable fighter since the franchise's first instalment
Kirby games are generally designed for a broad, family-friendly audience. They are known for colourful visuals, gentle difficulty curves and accessible platforming, in contrast to some of Nintendo's more challenge-driven franchises. This has made Kirby particularly popular among younger players and newcomers to gaming, while still retaining a dedicated adult fanbase.
Kirby has remained a fixture in Nintendo's lineup for more than three decades, with recent entries including Kirby and the Forgotten Land (2022), the franchise's first fully three-dimensional platformer, which was well received for modernising the series while keeping its core mechanics intact.
