What is the UK’s maximum working temperature? Everything you need to know

  • The Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning for extreme heat in central and southern England and Wales on Wednesday and Thursday. The warning will be in place between 9am on Wednesday and 9pm on Thursday.
  • Record-breaking temperatures are anticipated, with forecasts suggesting highs exceeding 38C and a strong possibility of surpassing the UK’s hottest June temperature of 35.6C, set in 1976.
  • While there is no legal maximum working temperature in the UK, employers are legally required to ensure “reasonable” temperatures for staff, according to the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas).
  • The service notes that employers should conduct “health and safety risk assessments” for extreme temperatures and reduce any identified risks.
  • The advisory Climate Change Committee (CCC) has previously recommended mandatory maximum temperature regulations for workers to safeguard against heatwaves.
