Jannik Sinner was struggling during his match against Daniil Medvedev, despite taking the first set. What started as a strong performance began to unravel, and the match looked like it might slip away from him.

The afternoon had started with such promise, but it didn’t take long for things to go sideways. It wasn’t long before he was moving gingerly, being pulled across the court by Medvedev.

Sinner has had health issues in recent tournaments and seems to be dealing with more than just fatigue. He’s been sick recently and is still recovering from an earlier injury.

Even though he had managed to grab a break in the third set, it was still surprising how eager he seemed for play to be suspended.

Medvedev had weathered the early storm, and momentum appeared to be shifting back towards Sinner, yet he clearly didn’t see it that way. He told the umpire: “It’s pouring!”

Sinner didn’t back down when the official pushed back, saying: “What do you mean? The problem is the lines. What if I slip on them? How can you not make the decision? It’s pouring!”

The exchange came shortly after Medvedev voiced his frustration over a medical time-out Sinner had taken earlier.

Jamie Murray raises concerns over umpire calls in Jannik Sinner’s match

Speaking during the Sky Sports broadcast, Jamie Murray backed Sinner’s view and raised questions about how the situation was being handled.

He didn’t hold back either, pointing out what he saw as a lack of control from the chair and suggesting that players have every right to step away if they feel conditions aren’t safe.

Murray said: “There is no way they should still be playing looking at that rain, no chance! I mean come on, umpire here! How can she say? Come on. This is unheard of from the umpire here, that she’s forced him to keep playing. This is nonsense.”

He added: “Jannik should also just stop playing, if he stops playing what are they going to do? I’m amazed that she’s saying they should continue, I’m even more amazed that Jannik is kind of accepting it.”

Murray concluded: “I’ve never seen an umpire so determined to keep the players on the court, normally they’re so cautious. She was determined, it was chucking it down!”
