The New England Patriots appear to believe Drake Maye is ready to show a much sharper version of himself this season.

Maye already gave New England enough flashes to feel like the franchise had finally found its long-term quarterback.

The internal buzz now suggests the Patriots think his next jump is coming from command, comfort and a deeper grip on the offense.

Greg Bedard hears the New England Patriots are warning people about Drake Maye leap

PatriotsCLNS shared Greg Bedard’s comments on how people inside the New England Patriots are talking about Drake Maye before the new NFL season.

Bedard said, “They’re telling people this: ‘Look out for the quarterback this year. You thought he was good last year, wait till you see him now.'”

“From what I understand, it’s the mentality, it’s how much he knows the offense even more, it’s how he has the tools,” he added.

The praise is significant because it is not only about arm strength or athletic ability. Those traits were already obvious when Maye entered the league as a top draft pick.

Maye is reportedly more comfortable with protections, checks and the rhythm of the offense, which can make the difference between a promising quarterback and a true weekly problem for defenses.

Drake Maye gives the New England Patriots a reason to believe the offense can travel

The optimism around Maye makes sense because his early career already showed the physical foundation New England needed to build around.

As a rookie, Maye produced 2,276 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 13 games, while completing 66.6% of his passes despite working through a limited supporting cast.

The mistakes were part of the picture, especially with turnovers and pressure management, but the flashes were hard to ignore. Maye attacked downfield, created with his legs and gave the Patriots a level of quarterback talent they had been missing.

New England has since tried to make life easier around him. The focus has been on improving protection, adding useful pieces and giving Maye more continuity inside Josh McDaniels’ system.

That last part may be the most important. A second year with the same offensive language should allow Maye to play faster before the snap instead of simply reacting after it.

Bedard’s report does not mean the Patriots are guaranteed a major leap. It does show that the people around Maye believe the jump is real, and that confidence can reshape expectations in Foxborough quickly.
