Shane Lowry has admitted his surprise at how well Wyndham Clark has performed over the first three days at the Travelers Championship after speaking with the US Open champion at TPC River Highlands.
It is becoming increasingly unusual for players to tee it up the week after a major win. However, Clark is in the field in Connecticut just days after securing his second major title.
It is hard to imagine just how draining the US Open would have been for the 32-year-old.
Clark not only had to find the energy to keep pushing when it seemed that Sam Burns was destined to snatch the title from his grasp in one of the game’s most remarkable collapses, but he had to do it in front of a crowd that was mostly desperate to see him fail.
Shane Lowry so impressed by how Wyndham Clark is performing at the Travelers Championship
Many of Clark’s peers were baffled by the abuse he received. It seemed that every single shot was followed by calls from the galleries for the ball to end up in a bunker or roll off the green.
Clark is tied for fifth with 18 holes to play at the final signature event of the year, alongside Shane Lowry. And speaking on Sky Sports about the reception Clark received in New York, Lowry outlined how impressed he has been by him.

“Yeah, it was interesting, wasn’t it? And I don’t know where it came from. It just happened. I guess they probably wanted Scottie to win maybe more than him,” he said.
“Yeah, the crowds out there are tough, but that’s what we always say. That’s the way they are. And we had at the Ryder Cup and we dealt with it. Wyndham dealt with it very well.
“I said that to him this morning, I actually sat beside him having breakfast this morning and he looks very tired by the way. I can’t believe how well he’s playing this week. He’s obviously just running on fumes and getting it around. But yeah, it is what it is and that’s just the way they are.”
Wyndham Clark looks ready to avoid repeating the mistake he made after the 2023 US Open
No player on the PGA Tour is in better form right now than Clark.
After missing the cut at the PGA Championship, he had not registered a single top 10 this season. However, his worst result since then has been finishing in a tie for 11th at the RBC Canadian Open.
He has won twice, while he also finished third at Memorial. On another day, he could have ended up in the playoff at Muirfield Village.
Clark’s biggest mistake after the 2023 US Open win was arguably assuming that he had figured everything out because he had won one of the game’s biggest prizes.
A Ryder Cup debut, and a win at Pebble Beach the following year probably did nothing to help on that front.
He gradually regressed and did not even finish in the top 50 in the FedEx Cup in 2025. Clark has missed five cuts in the majors since the start of the 2024 season.
He simply cannot allow himself to think that the comeback is now complete if he wants to prove that he is one of the best players on the planet over a much longer period.
His performance at TPC River Highlands hints that he is ready to keep his foot on the accelerator.
