What should you pack for the Algarve. Here are the essentials to bring along to make the most of your stay, whatever the weather.
Spectacular beaches, ochre cliffs, sun-drenched villages… The Algarve draws travellers each year in search of a change of scenery. Yet contrary to what you might expect, this stunning region in southern Portugal is not just about lounging by the sea. Between swims, walks and occasionally cooler evenings, it is best to pack smart to fully enjoy the trip.

Light clothing… and more
With temperatures hovering around 25°C for much of the year, the Algarve calls for light outfits. Dresses, shorts, T-shirts and breathable fabrics such as linen or cotton will be your best allies, especially in summer.
That said, do not stop there. A light jacket or sweater can come in handy, particularly in the evening or when coastal winds pick up.
If you are planning to dine out or stroll through historic centres, consider packing a slightly dressier outfit.
Beach essentials
No trip to the Algarve is complete without time on its beaches. To enjoy lazy days by the sea without coming back sunburnt, pack:
- sunscreen
- sunglasses
- a hat
- a microfibre towel (compact and practical)
- an easy-to-carry beach bag
- a mask and snorkel to explore marine life
Some coves are only accessible after a short walk, so travelling light is key. Comfortable sandals or shoes suited to rocky terrain can also be useful.
If possible, bring after-sun lotion, a few basic medicines and slip-on shoes to move easily between beach and town. Small items that take up little space, but make all the difference once you are there.

Gear for exploring
The Algarve is also best discovered on foot, along stunning hiking trails. Running along the cliffs, they offer some of the region’s most breathtaking views and are well worth the effort.
For that, pack:
- a pair of comfortable trainers
- a lightweight backpack
- a water bottle
- sun protection
Wind can be strong at higher altitudes, even in summer, so having a windbreaker within reach is a good idea.
And of course, to capture these landscapes, bring a camera or smartphone—ideally with a portable charger.

Packing for the season
While summer remains the most popular time to visit, the Algarve can be explored year-round. In spring and autumn, temperatures are milder but can vary throughout the day. Mornings may feel cool, especially by the sea, before giving way to warm, sunny afternoons.
In winter, the climate remains pleasant compared to the rest of Europe, though swimming is less common. Warmer clothing and closed shoes are more suitable, and some days can be windy or lightly rainy—so do not forget a waterproof jacket.
