A viral dashcam video of a cyclist blocking traffic during rush hour ignites a heated debate on road-sharing rules in Malaysia.
A woman’s frustration over a cyclist allegedly riding in the middle of the road and slowing down traffic during the morning rush hour has sparked heated debate online.
The incident was shared on Threads by @nasyella_ and has since gained more than 2,600 likes and nearly 400 comments, with many Malaysians weighing in on road-sharing etiquette between motorists and cyclists.
“Cycling in the middle of the road like it’s his father’s road. So irritating when people are trying to get to work in the morning and end up being late because of you. At first there were no cars behind, then it became a line of four to five cars,” she wrote in the caption.
“The more people told him off by honking, the more he moved towards the middle of the road,” she added.
The post included dashcam footage showing a cyclist riding ahead of her vehicle on what appeared to be a residential road.
Many commenters criticised the cyclist’s behaviour, including fellow cyclists who said riders like this give the cycling community a bad reputation.
User dawana_nazir wrote: “As a cyclist, riders like this really deserve to be honked at non-stop…”
“As a fellow cyclist, I am so sorry this happened to you. This is the type of uncle who joins in just because his friends do and does not know how to respect drivers even though we share the same road,” akifridhwan commented.
“The type who simply follows others into cycling but does not want to learn basic road etiquette, causing the whole cycling community to be criticised,” rangga_jahat360 added.
User fancydoughnut also expressed frustration towards cyclists who allegedly obstruct traffic during peak hours.
“In Putrajaya there are so many cyclists like this. We’re driving to work, you know. You’re cycling on a main road like it belongs to your father. I’ll definitely give a long honk.”
“You can’t advise old people, sis. Whether they ride bicycles or big motorcycles, they think the road belongs to them,” xulleyka added.
User makguam pointed out that both motorists and cyclists have the right to use the road, but urged everyone to be considerate towards one another.
“Road traffic accident lawyer here. Actually, both have the right to use the road. But for cyclists, if there are vehicles coming from behind, please give way too. Let us all be considerate towards each other so accidents can be avoided.”
However, hrzrfn argued that the driver could have overtaken the cyclist instead of continuously honking.
“The road beside was already clear. You could have just overtaken, but instead chose to honk and tailgate.”
