Who is Stephen Fleming? Ex-New Zealand captain replaces Brendon McCullum as England Test coach

  • Stephen Fleming has been named the new England Test coach after Brendon McCullum was sacked from the role earlier this month.
  • Fleming, 53, is New Zealand’s most successful and longest-serving Test captain, having played 111 Tests and 280 one-day internationals for his country before retiring in 2008.
  • Since finishing his playing career, Fleming has moved into coaching and has an 18-year association with Indian Premier League team Chennai Super Kings and led the side to five IPL titles, while he has also held coaching roles at Melbourne Stars, Rising Pune Supergiant, Joburg Super Kings and Texas Super Kings.
  • This will be his first international job, and he will work alongside Joe Root, who has been reinstated as England Test captain following Ben Stokes’s international retirement.
  • Fleming will also work in tandem with McCullum, who remains in charge of England’s limited-overs teams, with Harry Brook captaining the ODI and T20 sides.
