Kota Kinabalu: The Para or Disabled Sport Coach Award is a new category in the 2021/2022 Sabah State Sport Award Ceremony.
Sabah Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin said the addition of the new category was aimed at appreciating the sports coaches who contributed to the name of the state.
“The award categories contested are Best Sportsman and Sportswoman, Para Sportsman and Sportswoman, Hopeful Sportsman and Sportswoman, Men’s and Women’s Team, Best Coach and Para Coach.
“The other five awards are Sports Leadership Award, Special Award, Best Journalist Award, Best Sports Association Award and Sport Personality Award,” he said when met by the media after being broadcast live on Konti Sabah FM, Tuesday.
According to Ellron, the cash prize this year also increased to RM 137,000 in total.
“In 2012, the prize money for the Best Sportsman and Sportswoman Category alone was increased from RM3,000 each to RM5,000 and the amount is RM10,000 at this event.
“The winning prize for the Best State Sport Association Category has also been increased from RM10,000 to RM20,000.
“It is hoped that this can be used as a fuel and increase the efforts of our athletes in the state of Sabah to achieve even higher success,” he said.
Ellron added that the award nominations are managed by the Sabah State Sport Council and are quite intense because the evaluation takes into account the organisation of various sports events at the national and international level.
“For example the Tokyo 2021 Olympics/Paralympics, Vietnam Sea Games 2022, Asean Para Games 2022 (SOLO), Malaysia Games (Sukma) and Malaysia Para Games 2022 as well as various world championships involving martial arts, karate, bodybuilding, Muay Thai and aquatic events,” he explained.
The ceremony in conjunction with the official 70th Birthday Celebration of His Excellency Tuan Yang-Terutama Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, the Governor of Sabah, will take place next Tuesday.
