Aaron Rodgers’ delay with the Pittsburgh Steelers may be about control, not cash.

That is the most convincing way to view this now. Money may still matter, but the bigger issue could be how Rodgers protects the final stage of his NFL career.

Mike Florio raised a theory that makes the situation feel far less like indecision. Rodgers could want a private understanding that Pittsburgh will release him before the trade deadline if the season goes badly.

The Steelers have kept talks alive, with Omar Khan saying conversations continue. That matters because this is not just a normal veteran contract discussion.

Pittsburgh also placed a rare UFA tender on Rodgers. If he remains unsigned by July 22, the Steelers gain exclusive negotiating rights.

That changes the leverage. Rodgers can still wait for now, but he cannot wait forever without Pittsburgh gaining more control over his 2026 options.

That is why Florio’s theory is so useful. A handshake understanding would not be formal, but it would give Rodgers the one thing a written deal may not fully provide: a route out.

The waiver rule is why this matters so much

The 2026 NFL trade deadline is November 3. Before that point, a release would leave Rodgers with a cleaner path to choose his next team.

After the deadline, the situation changes. Released players must pass through waivers, which means another franchise could claim Rodgers and disrupt whatever ending he wants.

That is not a small detail for a quarterback at this stage. Rodgers’ 2025 production showed he can still function, so control of destination still has real value.

The Steelers should be careful with any informal promise. But Rodgers would not be wrong to ask for protection. If this is his final run, avoiding the wrong ending is a football issue, not a vanity issue.
