Why Bosnia is known as Bosnia and Herzegovina
The name Bosnia and Herzegovina comes from the two names of historical regions in the country that date back to the Ottoman Empire.
When the nation gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1992, they decided to merge the two together and name the country after them to reflect the geographic and cultural identities of both regions.
Bosnia is the larger, more mountainous region of the country, situated in the north. It got its name from the famous Bosna river and where you will find the capital Sarajevo.
Herzegovina is slightly smaller and is the southern region of the country, where you will find cities like Mostar. Its name derived from an old 15th century ruler of the area.
What links the USA and Bosnia?
In the aftermath of the Bosnian war in the 90s, lots of families fled and headed to the USA to escape war and begin a new life.
That has created a large diaspora of Bosnian nationals in the host city, and even means there will be some crossover on the pitch.
