Donald Trump will not be in attendance for the United States’ opening World Cup fixture against Paraguay on Friday.
The decision was confirmed by Andrew Giuliani, a member of the World Cup task force, ahead of kick-off.
Giuliani cited Trump’s busy schedule as the reason, but added that the president is still expected to play a role in the tournament as it progresses.
Why Donald Trump will not be at USA vs Paraguay

Giuliani gave the clearest explanation himself. “He’s not going to end up attending the opening game,” he said.
He then pointed to Trump’s packed diary, adding that “his scheduling is tight” before making clear that the decision applied to the opener against Paraguay.
That makes the reason public and specific. Trump is not absent because of a confirmed security issue, a footballing decision, or a change in tournament status.
Even without the president in attendance, the match remains a significant moment for the USMNT as they begin their home World Cup campaign in Group D.
Andrew Giuliani says Trump still expected to be involved in World Cup
Giuliani was quick to stress that Trump’s absence from the opener should not be seen as a sign he will be distant from the tournament.
He said Trump would remain engaged throughout the World Cup, and added that fans should “expect the unexpected” over the coming weeks.
Giuliani’s comments stop short of confirming any future appearances, but leave the door open for Trump to become more involved as the tournament unfolds.
The task force has broader responsibilities beyond this one match, including overseeing security and logistics across the United States for the entire competition.
For now, the message is clear. Trump will not be at USA vs Paraguay, but this may not be the last fans hear of him during the tournament.
