- England won an early penalty in their World Cup clash with Croatia on Wednesday after Noni Madueke was fouled by Luka Modric.
- England captain Harry Kane stepped up to take the spot-kick, but his effort was saved by Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.
- However, following a VAR review, it was determined that a Croatian player had entered the penalty area before Kane took his penalty, which is known as encroachment, while Livakovic was also off his line, leading to referee Clement Turpin ordering a retake.
- Kane made no mistake the second time around as he put England in front in the 12th minute.
- It was a welcome reprieve for Kane who also missed his previous World Cup penalty in England’s quarter-final against France in 2022.
