Why England v Mexico World Cup clash could kick off earlier than planned

  • England’s last-16 World Cup clash with Mexico could be moved to an earlier kick-off time due to the threat of a electrical storm in Mexico City on Sunday.
  • The game was originally scheduled to start at 6pm local time on Sunday (Monday 1am BST), but reports from Mexican media have claimed it could now begin six hours earlier because of the risk of a severe thunderstorm later in the day.
  • Should this be the case, the game would kick-off at 12 noon in Mexico (7pm BST), although Fifa is still yet to confirm whether the kick-off time has been officially changed.
  • Much has been made of England’s challenge of adapting to the higher altitude in Mexico, and they may now have less time to prepare for Sunday’s game if the kick-off is brought forward.
  • Only one match has been significantly affected by the weather at the World Cup so far, as there was a two-hour delay to the second half of France’s group match with Iraq due to thunder and lightning in the New York area.
