Why do new and even used car showrooms decorate new car delivery with a red ribbon, and soft toy and too many balloons that block the beauty of the new car

We see this on social media every day from almost all auto brands. A customer taking delivery of a new car or even a ‘second’ hand car and it is decorated with balloons and ribbons.

It can definitely feel counterintuitive when you just want to admire the clean lines, fresh paint, and sleek design of your brand-new ride, only to find it buried under a mountain of props.

The reason showrooms go all-out with giant red ribbons, plushies, and cluttered balloon arches comes down to psychological framing, social media marketing and a little bit of local culture.

1. The “Gift Unboxing” Effect

A car is usually the second-largest purchase a person makes in their lifetime after a home. Showrooms use a massive giant red bow to visually transform a complex, highly transactional financial purchase into a festive gift. It triggers an emotional “unboxing” feel, signalling that the stressful loan approval, paperwork and waiting period is over and its time to show off your purchase.

2. Social Media Marketing for the Dealer

Dealerships rely heavily on word-of-mouth marketing on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. A plain photo of a car sitting on a showroom tile floor looks like a generic stock image or sales listing.

A photo framed with balloons, a massive ribbon, and a giant key prop immediately tells scrolling viewers: “Someone just bought this today!” It creates visual hype and social proof, encouraging friends to congratulate the buyer in the comments while subtly advertising the sales advisor’s business.

3. Cultural Significance of Red & Prosperity

In Malaysia and across Southeast Asia, the colour red symbolises good luck, prosperity, joy, and protection from bad energy. Wrapping the bonnet in a big red ribbon or red flower bow (hong hua) acts as a traditional blessing for a smooth, safe drive on the road.

4. Soft Toys & Family-Oriented Goodwill

Sales advisors often include soft toys (or plush mascots) because many buyers bring their children or partners along for handover day. A plush toy softens the atmosphere and gives family members a tangible souvenir.

Additionally, some sales advisors buy these out-of-pocket to build rapport, express personal gratitude, and secure a 5-star customer feedback rating on the post-delivery review survey.

Our personal take! If you prefer a clean look, just let your sales advisor know a few days before handover: “Please skip the balloons and plushies, I want a minimal setup with just the car for photos.” They will happily save the cost and effort!
