Aduhai, PMX seems to be in a full-on nostalgia mood lately. At the PKR national congress, he practically opened the doors, played emotional jiwang songs, and appealed to all the Otai Reformasi to return home. Tian Chua is making his comeback, Dr. Xavier Jayakumar is rumoured to be sliding back in, and party insiders were even hinting at Mohamed Azmin Ali though Azmin quickly squashed that, basically saying, "Thanks bro, but I'm happy in Bersatu."
While bringing back old PKR veterans makes sense on paper, political realities heading toward GE16 tell a very different story. The Unity Government is juggling serious political friction. DAP backbenchers and grassroots supporters are increasingly restless over slow-moving institutional reforms and delicate compromises. Meanwhile, the Indian voter base a crucial swing demographic in urban and mixed seats is feeling increasingly detached and sidelined.
Add to that the drama surrounding MIC Deputy President Datuk Seri M. Saravanan. Charged in court over foreign worker quota allegations, Saravanan penned an extensive letter to Anwar, appealing for a thorough review and maintaining his innocence. When asked by reporters, PMX took a strictly hands-off approach, stating he would simply forward the letter to the MACC and the Attorney General’s Chambers to let the legal process run its course.
While staying out of court matters is proper governance, it leaves a massive political void on the ground. The Indian community sees their prominent leaders entangled in legal battles while feeling ignored by the government.
So, if PMX really wants to pull off the ultimate 1990s reunion arc and win back the grassroots, forget the formal political overtures. It’s time to call back Tan Sri S. Nallakaruppan.
Think about it. Before their bitter 2007 fallout, the Ijok by-election drama, and those headline-grabbing RM100 million defamation lawsuits that kept High Court lawyers rich for a decade, what were Anwar and Nalla famous for?
They were the country's most legendary double-act. You couldn't talk about 1990s Malaysian politics without picturing PMX at the net and Nalla at the baseline in matching white polo tees, serving aces and discussing national affairs over a set of doubles.
In Malaysian politics, no feud is permanent. Tun Mahathir and Anwar shook hands. UMNO and DAP sit in the same Cabinet and call each other comrade. If you told me Nalla was being brought back as a grassroots envoy to bridge the Indian voter gap, nobody would even bat an eye.
Imagine the unity press conference as they step out with their racquets:
"Political drama comes and goes. But to face GE16, we need our baseline defense and backhand rallies back in sync."
Instead of sending formal invitation letters through party secretaries, PMX should just send a simple WhatsApp to Nalla:
"Bro, Ahad ni on tak on singles? I bring the Dunlop balls, you book the court. Let's settle GE16 on the baseline."
Because in Malaysian politics, makan hati is temporary but finding a tennis partner who truly understands your game? That is legendary.
