Why Sabastian Sawe has withdrawn from the Berlin Marathon

  • Sabastian Sawe has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming Berlin Marathon on 27 September “due to an injury”.
  • The 31-year-old Kenyan athlete was due to defend his title after setting a marathon record of 1:59:30 in London in April.
  • Sawe became the first runner to officially complete a marathon in under two hours during his victory in London.
  • “I had been looking forward to achieving something special on the streets of Berlin and crossing the finish line at the Brandenburg Gate. I want to thank everyone who continues to support me and I wish all the runners taking part a great race,” Sawe said in a statement.
  • Following his withdrawal, Berlin will be headlined by a competitive women’s field led by Tigst Assefa, who broke the world record in the city in 2023.
