New York students may be living through a once-in-a-lifetime Knicks moment, but that still is not enough to cancel school or Regents exams.

It is a moment many fans thought they would never see.

The exam schedule is not moving.

Knicks parade school decision leaves students frustrated

Mayor Zohran Mamdani has confirmed schools and Regents exams will go ahead on Thursday, June 18, despite the Knicks’ ticker-tape parade, according to a report.

That decision means many city kids will be watching the first Knicks championship parade in franchise history from classrooms, testing rooms, or later highlights, rather than from Broadway.

There are four Regents exam titles listed on the state schedule that day across two testing windows. Life Science: Biology and Living Environment are listed at 9:15 AM, while Earth and Space Sciences and Physical Setting/Earth Science are listed at 1:15 PM.

Students have already launched petitions asking officials to cancel school, reschedule exams, or move the parade. Their argument is easy to understand. The Knicks had not won a title since 1973, and many young fans see the Canyon of Heroes celebration as something they may never experience again.

State education officials are not treating that as a reason to disrupt the exam calendar.

“New Yorkers are rightfully excited to celebrate the Knicks, but our students have been preparing all year for this moment, too. Just like the Knicks, they’ve put in the work and earned their chance to shine. We’re confident schools will support students through the exam schedule while the city celebrates this historic season.”

Knicks parade timing clashes with Regents schedule

The practical problem is timing. The parade begins at 10 AM near Battery Park, travels north along Broadway through the Canyon of Heroes, and finishes at City Hall Plaza, where Mamdani is set to present Jalen Brunson and the roster with Keys to the City.

That puts the celebration directly over the morning exam window and before the afternoon exam window. Even students without a test would face a normal school day, while those with Regents have a much bigger consequence if they skip.

The decision also reflects jurisdiction. The parade is a city celebration, but Regents exams are set by the New York State Education Department. Moving them is not as simple as Mamdani declaring a day off.

So the city gets its parade, and students get their exams. It is not the answer young Knicks fans wanted, but officials are framing it the same way the champions would: the work still comes first.
