Steve Kerr has signed a new two-year extension with the Golden State Warriors, but he is not pretending the contract guarantees anything.
The Warriors coach has been around the NBA long enough to know how quickly situations can change.
That is why his answer sounded more realistic than dramatic. Even after committing to Golden State again, Kerr understands that job security in the NBA is never absolute.

Steve Kerr jokes his Golden State Warriors extension offers no real safety
As Anthony Slater shared, Kerr said a new contract does not change how unpredictable NBA coaching can be.
“I mean, the way that the NBA works I could get fired a week into [the two-year extension]. You just don’t even think about that stuff,” Kerr said.
Kerr’s point was not that he expects the Warriors to move on from him immediately.
It was more about the reality of the profession. Coaches can sign extensions, win championships, build dynasties, and still face pressure the moment results dip.
That is especially true in Golden State, where Kerr’s success has created a standard that makes ordinary seasons feel like failures.
Golden State Warriors return still comes with pressure for Steve Kerr
Kerr’s two-year extension keeps him aligned with the final stretch of Stephen Curry’s championship window.
That timing matters. The deal gives the Warriors continuity, but it also makes clear that this next phase is about trying to maximize what remains of the Curry era.
Kerr has admitted he needs to be better after a frustrating season, with turnovers, inconsistency, and roster balance all becoming major problems.
He also knows the Warriors are no longer the same automatic contender they were at the peak of their dynasty. That is why his comment about possibly being fired sounded like a veteran coach refusing to get comfortable.
The extension gives Kerr another chance. It does not remove the pressure to prove the Warriors can still matter near the top of the Western Conference.
